Competitive dance is a type of dance where participants compete with each other. It is a widespread sport, with several styles, which include jazz, contemporary, lyrical, musical theatre, tap, hip-hop, modern, acro, and ballet. The announcement of the winner of the competition is usually made after all participants have performed.

Being a competitive dancer is not an easy task to handle. The task requires a lot of physical fitness even for the short dances. One must exercise and train on a daily basis in order to maintain and boost their technique, flexibility, strength, and skills. Competitive dancing is a year-round activity with participants only taking short breaks during summer and holidays.

When a competitive season is on, dancers have to take sessions to help them come up with improved routines for the competition. Also, dancers have to continue their training sessions during off-seasons to prepare for the upcoming season. Addition to this is intensives which are attended in summer by some dancers to improve their skillset.

Dance routines usually use music from commercially available songs done by professional recording artists. Routines are usually subject to time limits during competitions. That means that the dancers must be able to complete their routine within the allocated time frame. For this purpose, original, commercial music is normally edited to match with these time limits. The choice of music usually depends on the type of dance under consideration.

Currently, there are no set standards in the whole industry on how to score points in a competition. The number of points issuable by a judge and the maximum points one can score often vary with different competitions. When assigning dancers with points, judges put several factors under consideration. Among these factors includes technique, performance, choice, music, challenge level, and costumes.

There are varying ranks for the different competitors. In as much as a crystal is the highest honor awarded for some competitors, others receive gold medals. Majority of competitions avail title positions. As such, every dancer aims for a title position and the highest medal achievement. In order to compete for title positions, dancers incur more cost.

A crown and money are usually given as an award for those who win title positions. Title position holders in dance competitions are usually respected by most people. If the competition is at country level, the position holder would be considered as the president in the country. A lot of attention is given to the title position holder.
