By Tammara Odessa

Getting rid of excess weight can be very difficult. We have all heard the phrase - 'a minute on the lips, a lifetime on the hips'. There are many negative side effects of obesity which some are calling an epidemic, including heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and joint problems, to name a few. People every year make resolutions to lose weight because of the heightened awareness about the risks associated with being overweight.

What should someone do to lose weight properly? Is diet and exercise sufficient? A deeper analysis will be outlined.

Diet

When people think of weight loss, they immediately think of their diet. There are a variety of different diet plans that are now available commercially these days. Atkins, the hCG diet, the list goes on and on. Diets basically all have the same goal, which is to shed excess weight by burning fat, and to maintain muscle at the same time. We all need to keep in mind that certain types if dieting can actually be bad for you, so talk to an expert in the field. Excluding certain foods that in fact provide essential nutrients can be harmful rather than beneficial. Seeing a dietician can be helpful to get the right advice on a diet that will help you lose weight.

Simple steps include eating more fruit and vegetable, cutting down on red meat and fried foods and making sure to eat oily fish.

Exercise

A really good way to burn excess calories is to exercise regularly. Subcutaneous fat is burned along with calories and glycogen stores by using cardiovascular exercise techniques. There is evidence to suggest that intra-abdominal fat and obesity has a direct link with the development of insulin resistance and subsequently cardiovascular disease. By consuming a diet that is low in calories and performing exercise that burns more calories than is consumed everyday is what helps one lose weight.

Exercise requires commitment and focus. It is always best to exercise with a partner who will motivate you and make you work harder. Exercises such as jogging, brisk walks, cycling, cross training and even swimming increase the heart rate and build cardiovascular fitness while burning fat.

Achieving goals

It is correct that diet and exercise are the way forward when it comes to weight loss. It's never easy to begin a new diet and exercise regime, but there are many successful routines that can be followed that have helped many people lose weight. Personal trainers are another good option to help keep motivated, and many people benefit from joining a fitness club, as these things will make losing weight much more likely. Other types of assistance is available from weight loss clubs that will actually deliver healthy meals right to people's homes, which helps them to have easy access to nutritious food. There is no excuse!

Conclusion

There are plenty of safe and effective weight loss techniques available. Using time tested exercise and dietary routines can help tremendously. Be sure to consult a dietician or see your physician in order to set out a plan to lose weight safely and effectively.
