A Child Psychologist And Therapist NYC Works In Many Venues

By Annabelle Holman

Having an interest in children is a prerequisite for pursuing any career that works with or for them. A therapist in practice to provide help for children affected by any kind of trauma is in such a career position. In the position of a child psychologist and therapist NYC is a prime location in which to find a large number of children to help.

His or her education encompasses all aspects of their development from the time they are born until they reach eighteen. The factors under consideration are gender roles, language and sexual orientation. Some points studied are the all important personality development and social development.

Understanding and treating young children who are in a preverbal stage takes special patience and evaluation. It is because communication is difficult. The child in that age group does not have an adequately large vocabulary with which to share information.

An abused child may have to rely on communication in the form of art therapy. Sometimes anatomically-correct dolls are used and the child shows what happened by positioning the dolls. This might be the only way to communicate the fact that sexual abuse took place.

A school system employs one or more psychologists to work with student populations. They would be in elementary school or high school. All children in one school system may have only one psychologist at their disposal. This does not allow sufficient help in many cases.

As for another psychologist interested in that age group, an educational psychologist will focus on the learning process. This includes serving the needs of children requiring special help. It also focuses on children who are gifted and need advanced classes.

Some of the psychologists work with those children who are in need of help to be able to pursue education in the classroom. Some students have suffered trauma or abuse that interferes with their functioning in school. All receive evaluation and placement in the best possible classroom that will promote their success as a student.

There are a great many tests available to aid in these assessments. If a student has any kind of issue, it can be treated in the most efficient way with a good evaluation. The psychologist administering the tests must make sure the student understands how to answer questions on each test.

Each psychologist completes an extensive number of years of education to earn a doctorate. Plus, after the educative years, there are two years of internship to be served in a clinical setting under the supervision of an established psychologist. Then he or she can be licensed by the state and nation.

There are many job opportunities available for the child psychologist with a Ph. D. They work in mental health clinics, schools, hospitals and court systems. They conduct tests, they diagnose and they counsel the children as needed to promote good mental health.

Another facet of the profession is research. They study the process of how one learns. How children develop and the effect of the imagination on learning are their interests. Children must, for example, learn to perceive what is real and what is imaginary.
