The Truth About Neuropsychological Testing NYC

By Tanisha Berg

One of the worst things about a declining memory is the fact that people in the early stages of dementia do not recognize that they have a problem. Moreover, mood disorders such as depression and anxiety may also be associated with memory problems. With nearly 8.5 million residents, The Big Apple is the most populous city in America. As the Baby Boomer generation enter their senior years, dementia is a growing problem. Neuropsychological testing NYC can help to distinguish those people with Alzheimer's and other memory diseases from mood disorders to help doctors decide what treatment to use.

Neuropsychological tests (NPT) are designed to measure a psychological function that is specifically related to a particular region of the brain. There are four aspects to NPT. The first is how people score on a particular test compared to the rest of the population. This is called psychometrics.

Another type of NPT takes a look at how the subject relates to the world in terms of left and right. Another type of test is geared toward identifying anomalies and relating them to particular neurological disorders. The name for this type of test is pathognomics. Lastly, anomalous test scores may also be related to particular types of damage to the brain.

There are several reasons why your doctor may send you for NPT. Perhaps you have a history of substance abuse. NPT can evaluate to what extent your cognitive functions are diminished so that you can make an informed choice of whether to continue taking drugs or alcohol or choose to go into a treatment program. Your doctor may also send you for testing if you have recently suffered a head injury to determine whether there is any permanent functional damage. He or she may also use these tests to chart your progress with a particular type of treatment.

New York City is home to several world-class brain centers where NPT might be available. One of these is the Neurological Institute of New York Columbia University Medical Center. Researchers at the Institute have just received a four-year, $12.6 million grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to take a look at specific, rare genes that may be involved with Alzheimer'disease that may exhibit either a causal or protective effect.

The Neurological Institute serves a large and varied population in the Big Apple. The city itself is composed of five separate boroughs, each a county in its own right. The boroughs are Brooklin, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island. In the late 19th century, these five boroughs were consolidated under the name of a single city, New York.

New York City has a population density of roughly 28,000 people per square mile, the highest in the world. There are 800 different languages spoken here. New York is a major center for legal immigration. The headquarters of the United Nations is also located here, in Turtle Bay.

New York City was once called New Amsterdam, when it was settled in the early 17th century by immigrants from the Netherlands. When the English took over in the late to mid 17th century, the city was the capital of the country. At one point in English history, the town of York was designated the capital of England, soon after the Danish invasion in 866 AD.
