By Paulette Mason

There are many types of trauma that can affect a person enough to cause a disruption in his or her life. For example, many war veterans cringe on the Fourth of July at the sound of fireworks. Most can benefit from professional help to overcome these fears. Now there are licensed psychologists who offer Online ptsd counseling.

Any traumatic event that is frightening and makes someone feel out of control can bring on PTSD. Being robbed at gunpoint or seeing someone murdered before their eyes can have a seriously detrimental effect. Any frightening, out of control experience can lead to the symptoms of PTSD.

Events other than war are natural disasters such as an avalanche or a mudslide that buries people alive. It may be a rape or childhood sexual abuse. Even the knowledge that a loved one suffered such horror can bring on the symptoms of post-traumatic-stress-disorder.

Some of the symptoms are normal reactions to such happenings. The obsession with the event, feeling disconnected from others and nightmares will subside normally. In the person with PTSD, they will only grow worse over time.

Common emotions are distress, anxiety and fear. They do not lessen over time. The afflicted person is unable to talk about the trauma or confront any reminders of it. However, triggering events are beyond the control of the individual. He or she will live through it again and again in his or her mind.

It is not possible to forget. Memories continue to intrude in nightmares or during the waking hours. Sudden flashbacks occur, which are a sudden, uncontrollable feeling that the trauma is occurring again. Physical symptoms include nausea, sweating, muscular tension, rapid breathing and an elevated heart rate.

When thinking about the future, there seems to be no possible happy ending. Emotions are numb. There is no interest in working or doing things for fun. A decent quality of life is impossible to achieve.

Hopelessness and depression may set in. The person feels alienated from all the people who care about him or her. He might feel guilty and shamed for no reason. Substance abuse is commonly used to mask the memories.

Dealing with the symptoms as early as possible provides the highest likelihood of overcoming them. Being detached, it is difficult to convince him to find professional help. Without it symptoms will worsen and there are physical effects as well as emotional ones.

But, if someone is afraid to leave the home, it is not easy to get the help needed. Now there is online counseling provided by licensed mental health professionals. It is a good choice if the alternative is not finding help in person.

When selecting a counselor, he or she should have the educational credentials and a license to practice. It is the first session that will be the hardest to instigate. But, once the contact is established, it will grow easier. The victim might be relieved that help is forthcoming.

In addition to single sessions, there are plans available to help defray the cost. Some plans offer a specific number of sessions per week or month. It may provide the support the victim needs just knowing help is just a phone call away.
