Buying The Right Disaster Preparedness Kits

By Annabelle Holman

We often do not have any prior warning when disaster strikes. This is why it is so important to own disaster preparedness kits. A kit like this is designed for such emergencies. The supplies contained in a basic one such as food and water enable an individual to be sustained for a period of 72 hours when such a situation arises.

Some people choose to assemble their own kit. They feel confident that they know what to include and are prepared to shop around for quality items at good prices. Unfortunately many of us do not have the time or knowledge to do this. We prefer the convenience of being able to choose a product that has already been put together.

However, not many of us have the time or energy to do this. Fortunately, there are many such items for purchase from local and online stores. This offers the convenience of comparing many different items. One can also compare prices and read customer reviews before making a decision.

Some customers complain that the items included in bought ones are not of good quality and that they could have assembled a better one themselves. This is why purchasing from a reputable supplier is important. They often have experience when it comes to what it should contain and how best to organize supplies. They may even have made modifications to their products through the years due to suggestions by customers.

Basic supplies should be contained in a sturdy bag that is comfortable to carry. You do not need to be overburdened when on the move. On the other hand, certain essentials must be included for the kit to effectively sustain life.

Food and water are the primary considerations as they are essential to survival. Foodstuffs must be non-perishable and high in energy. Human beings cannot do without water and so this also has to be part of such a kit. It is usually contained in pouches. Apart from food and water, light, warmth and shelter are also considered. Heat blankets, flashlights and tents for shelter are usually included in a basic kit.

There are kits available that cover more than just the basics. They contain items like cooking utensils, tools and other equipment as well as fully stocked first aid kits. There are even some that are designed for long term survival, enabling someone to live off the land for a long period of time. The type of kit selected will depend on what exactly it is required for as well as the budget of the individual.

Even the most basic kit does include room for some personal items such documents, a wallet and medicine. These should always be protected in a waterproof container. A kit should be checked about every six months as certain items beyond expiry dates may need to be replaced. Everyone should own such a kit and make sure that items in it are always up-to-date. It should be just a matter of grabbing it and going in event of an emergency situation.
